Using Your Custom ESS Dashboard: Examples Our Clients Love To Use
Admin Users can design the interface of the ESS, choosing which widgets they see when they log in! Making these choices allows you to put what's most important to your organisation at the forefront of your staff's ESS Portal. Once they log into their portal, they will see what you deem most important for them to see, and even encourage engagement from them. You can learn the steps for how to set up your Custom ESS Dashboard here.
You can learn how to customize your ESS Dashboard in our article: Custom Employee Self Service Dashboard.
Here are some examples of ways our clients are using the Top portion of the Custom ESS Dashboard to highlight what's most important:
Time Off Management Prioritization
Some of our clients will place the Open Leave Requests widget towards the top because it shows which requests they still need to approve. If you have Employee Users who are leave approvers, this placement may be helpful because it prompts them to take action for outstanding leave requests they need to approve. Following that action item widget, they chose to display their employees' recent leave requests (which will show the status of that request), their Leave Balance Table, and the Shortcuts (so they can request time off straightaway from this page).
Time Off and Leave ESS Widgets shown:
- Open Leave Approvals
- Recent Leave Requests
- Leave Balance Tables
- Shortcuts (it includes the Request Time Off option)
Uplifting Messages and To-Do Items
This client wants to foster an uplifting and organized company culture by keeping their company's mission and values at the top of mind, adding an inspirational quote, and placing some priority to-do items towards the top. This format supports engagement with employees while keeping accountability for action items.
Uplifting Messages and To-Do Items Widgets shown:
- Company Mission
- Quote of the Day
- Open Expense Claims (to Approve)
- Recent Training
Inspiration & Important Notifications
This format is set to welcome your employees with an inspirational quote of the day, followed by important notifications and action items they need to attend to. This blend provides a lighthearted start of the day, followed up with a structure of organized accountability items for the day.
Inspiration & Important Notifications Widgets shown:
- Quote of the Day
- My Action Items
- Employee Goals
- Open Leave Approvals
- Other Action Items
Compliance and Action
This client intentionally formatted their ESS Portal's top section to highlight the Company Mission (a nice refresher to keep top of mind for staff), followed by that employee's own Action Items to take care of. Following the Action Items comes Employee Reminders (so they can stay on top of upcoming areas they will need to take action on later, and they can plan), then two common areas to track compliance items: Renewable Documents and Training.
The reason these two are highlighted in the top portion of this example is that although HR teams obtain these documents and assign training when needed, giving employees transparency into their own compliance and completed trainings supports building trust between the company and the employee, can boost engagement, and can improve operational efficiency—all while working towards regulatory and safety requirements being consistently met.
The last widget comes back to Action Items, but for others (especially helpful for manager-level employees with approval responsibilities).

- Company Mission
- My Action Items
- Employee Reminders

We're excited to provide this level of customization to our clients so you can set a precedent for your employees for what should be important to them daily at your company.
