Should our Managers be Admin Users?
A recurring question posed by new customers is whether or not their Managers and Team Leaders need Admin User access to HR Partner. The simple answer is that this is totally up to your team to decide!
Over the years we have added a lot of functionality to Employee Portals to help customers keep their Admin User numbers lower, but some still prefer to give their Managers Admin User access. To help you decide what will work best for your company, we have put together a comparison for you:
Without Admin User Access
From an Employee Self-Service Portal (ESS) a person can:
- Approve leave submitted to them
- Approve expenses submitted to them
- Approve timesheets submitted to them
- Be invited to participate in recruitment (without the ability to contact candidates)
- Be invited to participate in performance reviews
- Add goals for their direct reports
With Admin User Access
While Admin Users can have varying levels of permissions within HR Partner, some of the key reasons customers add Managers as Admin Users are:
- To provide them with a "hub" of their direct reports where they can access certain elements of their employee records
- To allow them to manually add certain leave types on behalf of their direct reports
- To allow them not only to participate in recruitment and performance reviews, but to trigger /initiate the processes themselves.
NOTE: Don't forget that Admin User access does not mean that a person sees everything; access can be heavily restricted and refined to meet your needs.
